Helga Brochhaus-Mürtz has lived as a freelance artist in Portugal, in rural Alentejo, since 1992.

Her jewelry (rings and earrings, brooches and belt buckles, bracelets and pendants) is inspired by the richness of nature’s forms: no piece is like the other, nothing is stenciled, everything is in motion, as if broken out of living matter. Even as a finished work, it seems to develop like a flower that blooms in one place and has already wilted in another – reflecting the perpetual transformation process of nature. There are references to symbols and myths of primitive peoples.  In addition to gold and silver, brass, copper, wire and sheet metal, precious stones and pearls, the artist also uses humble found objects such as feathers and wood, shells, stones, bones, leather, paper, fabric and seed pods.

Helga Brochhaus-Mürtz is not only an accomplished technician in her field. She works with passion and inventiveness, transforming her material again and again, experimenting, discarding, combining – until she has created a piece of jewelry that she can say at the end of the day (or week or month): it is perfect. She has recently developed a new style and created pieces that do not fit in with their richly decorated sisters.  You could call it “minimalism”: more rectangular pieces, mainly rings, flat and mostly made of metal, mostly without stones, still irregular and crooked like nature, but less lovely, almost cool-looking. Attractive for women, but undoubtedly the style of choice among male jewelry wearers.

Helga’s angels are just as reduced in form as the minimalist rings. By no means ethereal beings, they stand on broad legs, light and flat, but stable.  Even the torso and wings leave no doubt about what they are: guardian angels who take their task seriously. No one can ignore these pendants. For less pious customers, there are fallen angels available: in addition to the halo, they also have two small horns on their heads. And if you do want some decoration, you can also find angels or devils with a small gemstone.

 Helga Brochhaus-Mürtz is convinced that stones provide energy. And also that there is a special interaction between the buyer and the piece of jewelry they choose. People are attracted to the object and in turn give the object meaning. Jewelry can be a memory, a gift of love, a talisman, a comfort, a message. We can wear it on our bodies or place it somewhere in the room where we like to look at it. The main thing is: the happy connection. If you want to make your own piece of jewelry, you can learn basic techniques in the artist’s workshops: sawing and chasing, hammering and staining, filing, polishing and soldering.

Helga Brochhaus-Mürtz has been exhibiting her works of art for fourty years, in Germany and Portugal. Her work is already an integral part of the regional fairs and performance shows in the Odemira district. She is a member of numerous associations and meeting places that have set themselves the task of preserving and promoting the arts and crafts of the Alentejo. A permanent exhibition of her jewelry is located where the artist lives and works. Helga Brochhaus-Mürtz lebt seit 1992 als freie Künstlerin in Portugal, im ländlichen Alentejo. 

Ihre Schmuckstücke (Ringe und Ohrringe, Broschen und Gürtelschnallen, Armreifen und Anhänger) sind inspiriert vom Formenreichtum der Natur: kein Teil ist wie das andere, nichts ist schablonenhaft, alles in Bewegung, wie herausgebrochen aus lebender Materie. Selbst als fertiges Werk scheint es sich  zu entwickeln wie eine Blume, die an einer Stelle blüht und an anderer bereits verwelkt – den immerwährenden Transformationsprozess der Natur widerspiegelnd.

Es finden sich Anlehnungen an Symbole und Mythen primitiver Völker. Neben Gold und Silber, Messing, Kupfer, Draht und Blech, Edelsteinen und Perlen, verwendet die Künstlerin auch bescheidene Fundstücke wie Federn und Hölzer, Muscheln, Steine, Knochen, Leder, Papier, Gewebe und Samenkapseln.

Helga Brochhaus-Mürtz ist nicht nur eine versierte Technikerin auf ihrem Gebiet. Sie arbeitet mit Herzblut und Erfindergeist, transformiert ihr Material wieder und wieder, experimentiert, verwirft,  kombiniert  – so lange, bis das Schmuckstück entstanden ist, von dem sie am Ende des Tages (oder der Woche oder des Monats) sagen kann: es ist perfekt.

Seit Kurzem hat sie eine neue Stilrichtung entwickelt und dabei Stücke kreiert, die so gar nicht zu ihren reich verzierten Schwestern passen wollen. Man könnte von „Minimalismus“ sprechen: eher rechteckige Teile, hauptsächlich Ringe, flach und überwiegend aus Metall, meist ohne Steine, zwar immer noch unregelmässig und krumm wie die Natur, aber weniger lieblich, fast kühl anmutend. Attraktiv für Frauen, aber zweifellos Stil der ersten Wahl unter den männlichen Schmuckträgern.

Genauso formreduziert wie die minimalistischen Ringe sind Helgas Engel. Beileibe keine ätherischen Wesen stehen sie auf breiten Beinen, zwar leicht und flach, aber stabil. Auch Rumpf und Flügel lassen keinen Zweifel daran, was sie sind: Schutzengel, die ihre Aufgabe ernst nehmen. An diesen Anhängern kommt keiner vorbei. Für weniger fromme Kunden stehen wahlweise gefallene Engel bereit: die haben neben dem Heiligenschein noch zwei kleine Hörner am Kopf. Und wer doch etwas Zierrat möchte, der findet auch Engelchen oder Teufelchen mit einem kleinen Edelstein.

Dass Steine Energielieferanten sind, davon ist Helga Brochhaus-Mürtz überzeugt. Und auch davon, dass eine spezielle Wechselwirkung besteht zwischen dem Käufer und dem Schmuckstück, das er wählt. Der Mensch wird angezogen vom Objekt und gibt dem Objekt wiederum eine Bedeutung. Schmuck kann Erinnerung sein, Liebesgabe, Talismann, Trost, Botschaft. Wir können ihn am Körper tragen oder irgendwo im Raum platzieren, wo wir ihn gerne anschauen. Hauptsache ist: die glückliche Verbindung.

Wer sein eigenes Schmuckstück herstellen möchte, kann in den Workshops der Künstlerin grundlegende Techniken erlernen: Sägen und Treiben, Hämmern und Beizen, Feilen, Polieren und Löten.

Seit dreissig Jahren stellt Helga Brochhaus-Mürtz ihre Kunstwerke aus, in Deutschland und in Portugal. Ihre Arbeiten sind bereits fester Bestandteil der regionalen Messen und Leistungsshows des Landkreises Odemira. Sie ist Mitglied in zahlreichen Assoziationen und Begegnungsstätten, die es sich zur Aufgabe gemacht haben, Kunst und Kunstgewerbe des Alentejos zu erhalten und zu fördern.  Eine Daueraustellung ihrer Schmuckstücke befindet sich dort, wo die Künstlerin lebt und arbeitet.

Helga Brochhaus-Mürtz vive como artista freelancer em Portugal, no Alentejo rural, desde 1992. 

As suas joias (anéis e brincos, pregadeiras e fivelas de cintos, pulseiras e pendentes) são inspiradas na riqueza de formas da natureza: nenhuma peça é igual a outra, nada é modelado, tudo está em movimento. Vivem.

Mesmo sendo uma obra acabada, parece desenvolver-se como uma flor que desabrocha num lugar e murcha noutro – refletindo o constante processo de transformação da natureza. Há referências a símbolos e mitos de povos primitivos.  Para além do ouro e da prata, latão, cobre, fios e chapas metálicas, pedras preciosas e pérolas, o artista utiliza também objetos encontrados humildemente, como penas e madeira, conchas, pedras, ossos, couro, papel, tecidos e vagens de sementes.

Helga Brochhaus-Mürtz não é apenas uma técnica experiente na sua área. Trabalha com paixão e inventividade, transformando o seu material vezes sem conta, experimentando, descartando, combinando – até criar a joia, da qual pode dizer no final do dia (ou da semana ou do mês): está perfeita.

Desenvolveu recentemente uma nova direção de estilo e criou peças que não combinam de todo com as suas irmãs ornamentadas. Poderíamos falar de “minimalismo”: peças bastante retangulares, principalmente anéis, planas e maioritariamente feitas de metal, maioritariamente sem pedras, ainda irregulares e tortas como a natureza, mas menos bonitas, de aparência quase fria.  Atraente para as mulheres, mas sem dúvida o estilo preferido entre os utilizadores masculinos de joias. Os anjos de Helga têm um formato tão reduzido como os anéis minimalistas. De forma alguma são seres etéreos, sustentam-se sobre pernas largas, leves e planas, mas estáveis. A fuselagem e as asas também não deixam dúvidas sobre o que são: anjos da guarda que levam a sério a sua tarefa. Ninguém consegue passar por estes trailers. Os anjos caídos estão disponíveis para os clientes menos piedosos: para além da auréola, possuem também dois pequenos cornos na cabeça. E se quiser alguma decoração, também pode encontrar anjinhos ou demónios com uma pequena pedra preciosa. Helga Brochhaus-Mürtz está convencida de que as pedras são fornecedoras de energia.

E também que existe uma interação especial entre o comprador e a joia que escolhe. As pessoas são atraídas pelo objeto e, por sua vez, dão significado ao objeto. As joias podem ser um lembrete, um presente de amor, um talismã, um consolo, uma mensagem. Podemos usá-lo no corpo ou colocá-lo em algum lugar da sala para onde gostamos de olhar. 
O principal é: a ligação feliz.
